The Mayson Group is seeking a regional business director for a Tier 1 to the automotive industry, with a focus on business in North America.  In this role the Regional Director will oversee direct business via a sales manager, OEM purchasing contact, and OEM engineering contact.  The regional director will have P&L responsibility for a ~ $200M – $250M territory and a technical support team.  As part of a larger profitable tier to the automotive industry, the ideal candidate will help set regional strategy for the broader market across all customers and be a candidate for future leadership opportunities.  Our client has been gaining share and improving the quality of their offering over the past five years.  They are well positioned for future growth and have a clear strategy for success.

Key requirements:

  • Direct sales management experience in a sales management or business director role focused on the automotive industry.
  • Strong communication and people leadership skills. Ability to sell upward – strategy, creative ideas on how to increase market share or improve profitability.
  • Strategic analysis capability and implementation experience to maintain their current favorable market share.
  • Financial acumen to oversee pricing and support costs in a competitive market.
  • Ability to understand technical aspects of the offering is required.  Technical background or MBA highly preferred.
  • Comfortable working in a results oriented organization, with a track record of results.

Key Focuses:

  • Regionally oversee all commercial aspects associated with key OEM account.
  • Oversee management and development of technical support team.  (50-70 people reporting)
  • Oversee annual pricing process.
  • Oversee regional engineering contacts and processes.

The Mayson group has been exclusively engaged by a dynamic and fast growing (+ 50 year old, family-owned ) coatings manufacturer to find an entrepreneurial and passionate technical leader.  With a sales organization in excess of twenty representatives and multiple manufacturing plants across the sun belt, our client is seeking to expand their product development capacity with a technical manager/ director who will focus on expanding the organization’s technical staff and facilities, while providing hands-on formulation direction to expand the offering.
The laboratory and main manufacturing site are located in a highly desirable area in Florida.

As a member of the company’s leadership team, the technical manager/ director will additionally have close ties to 1) the manufacturing organization focused on plant support and new product introductions, 2) the product management function as new opportunities are identified, and 3) the sales / distribution support organization that oversees field application.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Expand capabilities of technical organization in support of construction coatings line expansion including mentoring of existing staff and selection of additional individual contributors.
  • Specifically lead development of polymer, asphalt, Si, and PMMA based coatings, in addition to associated mastics, adhesives, and sealants for the for the liquid applied roof membrane market.
  • Ensure products meet industry standards and meet or exceed competitive offerings.
  • Work closely with the other functional managers departments.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge and formulation experience in the roof coatings market a plus, especially moisture cure systems, silicones, and water-based acrylics.
  • BS/ MS polymer science or equivalent.
  • Entrepreneurial in nature, able to lead a technical team that is supporting a dynamic sales organization, but as well work hands on when required to assure that new and improved products are available to the sales organization.
  • Technical leadership skills including project management, DOE, and 6 sigma methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to join the business leadership team in support of managing the overall enterprise, within a flexible small company environment.

This coordination role requires an individual who can assess customer requirements and provide technical direction and prioritization on product improvement projects.  Our client is a well-established player in the coatings market who is seeking to grow in current and adjacent markets.  The successful candidate will have a combination of both technical / planning skills and strong communication skills to support technically oriented customer projects and drive internal programs.  For chemists with excellent communication skills, this is additionally an opportunity to work more closely with customer and product management groups.

Key requirements include:

  • Technical degree.
  • 7+ years formulation experience in a manufacturer focused transportation focused segment (auto OEM, auto plastics, HDT, CV, or similar transportation coating).
  • Technical acumen and market knowledge to provide guidance to the team in terms of product modification and performance verification.
  • Strong planning and project management skills to assure that both urgent and longer term projects are completed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Stage-Gate or similar project management skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 15%.

  • Provide guidance and mentor more junior support chemists.
